Testimonials

Reading these stories takes you on a journey into the wilds of the human condition. No less chilling for its matter-of-fact tone, the stories offer an insight to those who, like me, have been touched by the effects of mental illness on a loved one. The book is both sobering and uplifting. I recommend it to all as it offers a window to pain and despair many of us are fortunate not ever to experience. The stories succeed not for their darkness, but for the light they cast, for it is the courage and hope that linger long after the last page is turned.  This book will become a must read to both sufferers and carers!’

"It is a sad fact that many of the estimated 222 million individuals with bipolar disorder, and 51 million living with either schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder worldwide, suffer in silence. Inspired Recovery details the stories of survivors who have overcome the limitations of their illnesses to live their best lives and achieve their dreams. Inspired Recovery is a deeply moving collection that bears testimony to the human spirit. No matter how hard or high the mountain is to climb, it can be done! This is one of the truly important books of our time with the potential to bring hope, peace and inspiration to millions".

Rebecca Fidele, Founder, Australian Bipolar Schizoaffective Network

---------------------

“People with mental illness have enough to put up with, without the additional distress caused by stigma and discrimination. Nothing dispels this misunderstanding more effectively than hearing the personal stories of those who know what it’s like first-hand to live with these illnesses”.

SANE Australia

---------------------

Though their life experiences may be very different, hope, resilience and recovery are recurring themes that shine through these remarkable stories from people who live with a mental illness.  Personal stories have been collected from people in Australia, Argentina and the USA.

All these stories are, in fact, a gripping read.  Start reading one amazing story and you won’t want to put it down until you have finished.  Some of the stories are incredible, but you know they are true.  Some will disturb you to the point of tears.  Some will delight you with the strength and wisdom of their characters.  Some contain tips we can all use to maintain our mental health.

All are intended to break down the mystery and the stigma surrounding mental illness.   Stigma, while some attitudes have changed over the years, is still a barrier that anybody involved in mental health, whether a consumer, carer or service provider has to break down before enduring progress can be made.

Thank you so much to the ten people who have had the nerve and the spirit to share their stories with us so honestly.  There is an obvious altruistic motive in telling these stories for the benefit of other people with a mental illness, their families and friends.

This is a book that consumers, carers, mental health workers and the general public should read to gain a better understanding of the lives that extraordinary people struggle with daily. I challenge you not to be moved!

Excerpts

The depression I experienced was so deep and so dark, I would scream out in anguish and pain.  I could barely stand it.  The mental torment was more agonising to me than any physical injury could ever be..
