The Inspiration for
Inspired Recovery

Picture One
Author Sonya Melbourne explains why she welcomed an opportunity to put this collection of stories together:

“The effects of my mother’s mental illnesses shaped my early life.

My mother was born with bipolar disorder and later developed both schizoaffective and borderline personality disorders. She has also a number of serious physical ailments and has suffered horrific abuse throughout her life.

I was bullied by neighbourhood kids for being the ‘zombie’s daughter’ or ‘the psycho’s kid who must be a psycho too’. I was laughed at, threatened, chased, abused and even spat on (memorable!). But these experiences were fleeting. Watching my mother suffer and being unable to help her was the real challenge. It took me many years to accept this.

It is watching her grow as a person and retain her gentle nature despite all the odds that has humbled me. Her pro-active approach to healing is an inspiration to me and to others. Now aged 60, my mother is one of the happiest people I know (most of the time). And she is not the only one among us with such wisdom, fearlessness and strength.

Inspired Recovery is not a technical text. It does not give advice, describe causative factors or recommend specific treatments.

These stories are not accounts of mental illness. These stories explore the journey of fellow human beings who, amongst other aspects of their life, deal with mental illness. They welcome us into their experience with courage and honesty. They willingly share their pain and also their joy, in the hope that we will begin to understand. In the hope that tomorrow will feel a little brighter for us. So that we can always know that there is a way through. There is hope.”

Excerpts

The depression I experienced was so deep and so dark, I would scream out in anguish and pain.  I could barely stand it.  The mental torment was more agonising to me than any physical injury could ever be...
